Selecting the Perfect Coffee Table & Rug to Fit Your Space

Selecting the Perfect Coffee Table & Rug to Fit Your Space

Home renovation projects are always a fun process, but perhaps the most exciting and part is the moment when the bones are all in place and it’s time to select furniture and add in those personal finishing touches. We sat down with Lianna, our Marketing Manager who was happy to share her tips on how to select functional furnishings to fit your style and that fit seamlessly into your space.

"My husband and I were very lucky to be able to design and build our new home over last two years. There were a million decisions to make about the build itself, but I was mostly looking forward to the decoration and design of the rooms once they were finished. I knew that I wanted to design our living room with the help of Pineridge Hollow. The furniture styles carried in the show room were constantly catching my eye. I knew we’d be able to find something to match my aesthetic and there were so many options for each piece to be customized with."

"However, I quickly realized that I really didn’t know how to select furniture for our space! Generally, I know what I want for colours and style but I have never had to think about filling a space and making it functional. Here are some tips I learned with the help of the design team at Pineridge Hollow:"

CHOOSING A COFFEE TABLE

You might be surprised to learn how important a coffee table is in a living room space! Dimensions and details need to be considered to achieve a functional, appealing layout.

01.

CONSIDER SIZE & SPACE

The ideal space between the edge of your sofa and the coffee table is approximately 18 inches – close enough to put a drink or book down, but far enough to stretch out your legs. Choose a coffee table that is no more then two-thirds of your sofa length.

02.

THINK ABOUT HEIGHT

The height of your coffee table is key. The surface should be 1-2 inches lower than your sofa seat.

03.

BALANCE YOUR STYLE

Strike a balance between your sofa and coffee table; they should complement each other.  If you have a plush, solid sofa you should choose a coffee table that has a glass top or leggy frame. If your sofa slim and sleek, try a chunkier table with a thick wood top or solid base.

04.

WARM UP YOUR SPACE WITH WOOD

If you have a large space with high ceilings and lots of windows, wood brings warmth to the room. If your room doesn’t fit that description but you still want to add wood to the space, choose a long narrow table that isn’t too bulky.

05.

DON'T OVER-DO IT

Details can make a coffee table special but a piece with hammered details or lots of wood cutouts needs room to breathe. If your sofa and rug are solid colours then it might be a good idea to add a table with some details. You don’t want everything in the room to be screaming for your attention.

CHOOSING AN AREA RUG

To many people the area rug is an afterthought. An area rug has so much purpose - in fact our in-house designers love to start with an area rug for design inspiration in a room! Here are some tips for the maximizing your floor’s potential!

01.

LOCATION

Think about how much traffic the room gets. This should guide your decisions for what materials, construction, pile and thickness will work best. For example, in a dining room a flat weave or low tufted rug generally work best so that you can easily pull chairs in and out, and so food crumbs don’t get lost in it. In a bedroom, a thick shag rug will feel great on your feet in the morning when you wake up.

02.

RUG STYLE

Area rugs can be powerful decorating tools, whether they act as artwork for the floor or provide a complementary background for other décor. Consider what kind of atmosphere you want to create in your room. An area rug doesn’t need to match everything in a room, but it should work with the textures and tones of the existing furnishings.

03.

RUG SIZE

A rug that’s too small for the space is one of the most common decorating mistakes. For most average sized rooms, there should be about 10-20 inches of bare floor between the edges of rug and the walls of the room. Depending on the space, you can go as low as 8 inches and as high as 24 inches. In any case, make sure the rug is centred in the room and the distance between the rug and the wall is the same on all four sides.

04.

BUDGET

Invest in the best rug you can afford. Look for good quality natural materials such a wool and silk. A high-quality wool rug will wear well and look better over time. If you have kids and are purchasing a sofa, you’re expecting it to last through 12 years of spills and everyday life; you should have the same expectation for your area rug. So set your price limit before you shop, then add 10 percent so that you have some flexibility within that range.

05.

DON'T FORGET A RUG PAD!

It might seem like an unnecessary expense, but a rug pad pays for itself by extending the wear and life of your rug. It adds a layer of cushion and helps keep your rug in place so it doesn’t curl, move or create a tripping hazard.
